We recently helped a couple who was moving into a beautiful modern home overlooking downtown Asheville. They had a small collection of art to hang, including a few pictures to put up in tricky spots, and a heavy mirror. This brought up an interesting consideration when it comes to mirror placement. I'll start by showing you this beautiful painting which we hung in their bedroom. It had belonged to the homeowner's mother, and it was really just right for the room. On the other side of the room was a wall painted dark black, where the homeowners wanted to place a mirror. They planned to add a furniture grouping off to the right, so they asked us to hang the mirror next to the doorway. Here it is all hung up, with a bonus shot of Arthur's knees as he works on another picture. One nice consideration when placing a mirror is to consider what the mirror will reflect. In this case, it reflects that lovely painting so that you experience it when you enter the room through the doorway, and again when you walk back to the living room. (It's more centered from most angles; I had a challenge to keep myself out of the photo.) As you can see from the pic of Arthur's knees, we also hung a wide picture over the doorway... ...and another picture of similar proportions on the other side. This is a great way to use long, skinny pictures that can otherwise be hard to place. It's almost like having a transom over the door. I should add that this art placement wasn't our idea; the clients had consulted with Kris Watson, a local Asheville interior designer who did a great job with their art placement. I really like how the art to mimics the clerestory windows in the main room a few steps away. If you need someone to hang a heavy mirror near Asheville, or help you decide where to put it, we're happy to assist.
